Here are some tips to prolong the life of your tote:
Care for the woven rope – Cleaning
- Remove debris: Before washing, shake or use a soft-bristle brush or the soft upholstery attachment on a vacuum to remove loose dust and debris from the rope.
- Create a mild soap solution: Mix a few drops of mild soap, such as baby shampoo or a gentle laundry detergent, with lukewarm water. For tougher stains on light-coloured rope. You can use a solution of diluted white vinegar and water.
- Spot-clean: Dip a soft cloth or a soft-bristled brush into the solution, wring it out, and gently scrub any dirty spots. Avoid harsh scrubbing, which can damage the fibres.
- Rinse thoroughly: Use a separate cloth dampened with plain water to wipe away all soap residue.
Drying
- Air-dry: Lay the item flat on a clean towel to air-dry completely.
- Avoid direct sunlight or heat: Do not place the item in direct sunlight or use a machine dryer, as this can weaken the rope fibers and cause fading.
- Stuff to hold shape: If applicable, lightly stuff the item with tissue paper or a towel to help it keep its shape while drying.
Protection and storage
- Protect from moisture: Store in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent mould and mildew. If the item is for outdoor use, bring it inside or use a waterproof cover.
- Shield from sun: Keep the woven rope out of prolonged, direct sunlight to prevent fibres from becoming brittle and fading.
- Use a fabric protector: For added stain and water resistance, you can apply a fabric and upholstery protector suitable for the type of rope.
Care for the vegan leather base – Cleaning
- Wipe regularly: For daily care, use a soft, damp microfiber cloth to wipe down the surface and remove dust and dirt.
- Prepare a cleaning solution: Mix a small amount of mild, non-abrasive soap (like gentle dish soap) with warm water.
- Clean and rinse: Gently wipe the surface with the soapy solution, then use a separate clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
- Address stubborn stains: For tougher marks like ink, dab the area with a cotton swab and a tiny amount of rubbing alcohol. Always test this method on a hidden spot first.
Conditioning
- Moisturise to prevent cracking: Vegan leather can dry out and crack over time. Use a conditioner specifically made for synthetic or vegan leather. Alternatively, a small amount of coconut oil or Vaseline can be used.
- Apply sparingly: Dab a small amount onto a microfiber cloth and buff it gently into the surface to restore shine and softness.
